Alexandre O. Philippe, MFA
Alexandre was born and raised in Switzerland, where he hosted film salons for his parents¹ friends at the early age of 13. In 1998, Alexandre graduated with a Masters Degree in Dramatic Writing from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
After several years as a working screenwriter, he turned to directing. His first film, CHICK FLICK (The Miracle Mike Story), premiered at the 2003 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea, and was the only film to sell out four times at the 2003 Denver International Film Festival.
His follow-up, EARTHLINGS (Ugly Bags of Mostly Water), screened at numerous film festivals around the world before Los Angeles-based Shoreline Entertainment picked it up for distribution. Most recently, it was purchased by Swipe Films, and released theatrically and on DVD in the UK after a successful London premiere at FrightFest 2006. EARTHLINGS was voted Best Local Film of the Year by Westword (Colorado) in 2005.
That same year, Alexandre was selected by the City of Greeley among 50 filmmakers to direct an artistic documentary about the importance of water in Eastern Colorado. The 25-minute WRITTEN IN WATER (a City of Greeley 1% for Art project) is on permanent exhibit at the Greeley Museum. It is also being used by various schools and libraries to educate the people of Eastern Colorado about water use and water conservancy.
Most recently, Alexandre was hired by Denver Water to direct and produce an educational piece now out on DVD, and by New Moment Films to direct LEFT, an impressionistic short film devoid of dialogue. LEFT was mixed at Skywalker Sound, and is the first film in history to have been recorded, edited and mixed at the exceptional resolution of 96kHz/24bit for Dolby¹s new process of lossless encoding in TrueHD technology. LEFT premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival, and is an official selection of 13 international film festivals, including Bilbao, São Paulo, and Geneva. It won the 2006 Saga Prefecture Governor Award at the Akira Kurosawa Memorial Short Film Competition.
Off the set, Alexandre is Director of the Lighthouse Screenwriting Program. A frequent speaker and lecturer, he has conducted Dramatic Writing seminars and workshops for numerous schools and organizations nationwide. His stage plays have been produced in San Francisco and New York City in venues such as The Provincetown Playhouse, La MaMa, ETC, Musical Theaterworks, and Fest on the FaultLine. His storytelling background and strong involvement with the dramatic arts bring a unique edge to his work as a filmmaker.
