Workshop Details:
Title:
Stretching the Truth
Cost:
$65.00
Description:
Larger-than-life characters don't merely present themselves as realistic literary depictions--they bound off the page into your lap. Bigger, brighter, and more imposing than any human could possibly be, nothing about these giants is average or ordinary --yet somehow they seem even more believable than their life-size counter-parts. With examples like Jay Gatsby in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Bartleby in Melville's "Bartleby the Scrivener," and Mrs. Shortley in Flannery O'Connor's "The Displaced Person," we'll talk about the excitement and power (as well as the danger) of using exaggerated characters in realistic fiction, and as we go along I hope you come with your own discoveries of how using exaggeration can bring your own stories to life—or kill them off for good.
