Title:
Writing the Middle

Cost:
$95.00

Description:

This session, designed for anyone writing fiction or narrative nonfiction, takes up the question: What next?  You’ve introduced your protagonist, imagined a setting, established a central conflict or dilemma.  Maybe you even have a sense of how it will all turn out.  But how do you get from here to there?  The bulk of any narrative is “the middle,” a murky, elastic territory in which time passes and things happen.  We’ll grapple with some of the challenges that you face as you leave your beginning and set out into this territory:  How do you shape the material?  How do you maintain tension?  How do you keep surprising your reader—without introducing so many new elements that you lose your forward momentum?  How do you keep faith in your project?  Discussions will offer some techniques for coping with these challenges, and we’ll do some planning and writing exercises to get you started on the middle path that’s right for your narrative.
